HPE to build $35M supercomputer for NCAR

A $35M contractHewlett Packard Enterprise has won a $35+ million contract to build a new supercomputer for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The new system will be nearly 3.5 times faster than NCAR’s existing system and improve predictions of wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, solar storms, and climate change—up to 10 years before they occur. The solutionPowered by the HPE Cray EX supercomputer, the system will integrate high performance computing (HPC) technologies, including:

  • Expanded storage using HPE Cray ClusterStor E1000.
  • Purpose-built HPC networking using HPE Slingshot.
  • Optimized HPC and AI applications using the HPE Cray Programming Environment.
  • Improved modeling and simulation using AMD EPYC™ processors.
  • Targeted AI to support data- and image-intensive workloads using NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs.
